Easy Alternative to Garter Tab Cast On

Easy Alternative to Garter Tab Cast On

If you find the garter tab cast on method confusing, or if you want to avoid a hump that sometimes forms on the edge started with a garter tab, feel free to use an alternative way to get those nine stitches on your needles.

This method is easier, faster and it doesn’t create any humps and bumps. The cast on point will stay neat and flat whether you use this approach to start a triangular shawl, a crescent shawl, or any other project that needs a pinpoint cast on.

Let’s see how this alternative to garter tab cast on works step by step

If you plan to make this cast on in garter stitch (to get a look similar to the one we get when we use the garter tab cast on method), don’t worry about mixing up left-leaning and right-leaning increases. Use the increase the feels easier for you to form all new stitches because the slant won’t show in garter stitch anyway.

Many thanks to Kathleen Z for suggesting an idea that lead me to developing this method.
